Bunnell City Commission and City Staff Distributed Food to its Citizens

Bunnell, FL (April 17, 2020) With all the COVID-19 related closures and affects of closing businesses, the Bunnell City Commission has been trying to figure out a way to best support and boost the morale of its residents. This week, the option presented itself, and the Bunnell City Commission jumped at the opportunity.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2020, Pastor Silano extended an offer to provide food to be used at a food distribution site to be hosted by the City of Bunnell. By 4:00 PM on the same day, all households within the City of Bunnell with a utility account were provided event details by a telephone call to the number on file with their City utility account. The Housing Authority had been asked to contact its residents as well.

Today, with a little less than 48 hours to plan, organize and host, the City distributed bags and boxes of food in a no contact setting from behind the Coquina City Hall. Mayor Catherine Robinson, Vice Mayor John Rogers, Commissioner Donnie Nobles, Commissioner Tonya Gordan and about 30 City employees distributed food to an estimated 500 households. Commissioner Bill Baxley wanted to be present but is continuing to follow the CDC guidelines for those designated as a “vulnerable” population.

The operation was relatively simple: follow the set route established by the City, when directed by Staff pull up to a designated loading station and pop open your trunk or cargo gate from within the vehicle, let staff load the food and then drive away. Safety protocols were followed, including the wearing of masks, gloves and eye protection. No one was turned away. Not only did the City provide assistance to households who came to the site, but deliveries were made too because the City Commission recognized that not all Bunnell families may have a vehicle or be mobile. Deliveries were made to the Belle Vista Apartments for the residents and 90 bags of food left for the residents to pick up from a designated site at the complex, the Housing Authority was provide with boxes of food to distribute to residents without vehicles and the Family Life Center and Project Warm where also provided bags of food.

Overall, it was a very successful day and the Commission hopes that this event directly helped the citizens of the City of Bunnell while we strive to keep following the guidelines of the CDC to get us one day closer to the end of COVID-19’s impact on our daily lives.
